Upload Article

Submitting your article for review by Young Scientist requires creating an account on this website and then uploading your article.

Prepare Your Article Submission

To prepare for your article submission, you will need the following items:

  1. Your name, mailing address, and email address
  2. The name and city of your school (you may list one or two schools)
  3. The full title of your article
  4. Your article document, as formatted by the Young Scientist Article Submission Template from the Template Download page
    • Filename: yourlastname_article.doc or yourlastname_article.docx
  5. Up to three 300 ppi figures as explained on the Figure Support page
    • Filenames: yourlastname_figure01_large.jpg, yourlastname_figure02_large.jpg, yourlastname_figure03_large.jpg
    • Images may be saved as jpg, gif, png, tif, or eps
  6. A 300 ppi square thumbnail image to represent your article in the journal's table of contents, as explained on the Figure Support page
    • Filename: yourlastname_thumbnail.jpg
    • Image may be saved as jpg, gif, png, tif, or eps
  7. Optionally, you may have supplemental information in the form of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, videos, audio, etc.
    • Filenames: yourlastname_supplement01.jpg, yourlastname_supplement02.doc, yourlastname_supplement03.mpg, etc.

Create an Account

If you have not already created an account, you must do so before you can submit your article.

  1. Go to the Create new account page and enter your information
    • A valid email address is required to activate your account
  2. Wait for an email message from young.scientist@vanderbilt.edu titled "Account details for [your_username] at Young Scientist Journal"
    • The email message may take several minutes to arrive. You may need to check your spam folder for the message.
    • Please do not create an additional account while you wait for the activation link
    • If you have touble creating and activating your account, please go to the Contact Us page and choose the category, "I need help with the article submission process"
  3. Click the link in the email to activate your account and create your password

Log In to Your Account

If you are returning to edit your submission or you are submitting an article from another computer than where you created your account:

Create Your Journal Article Submission

Once you have created your account and password and are logged in, you will see a new section on the right side of each page in the Article Submssion section of the website called "Author Links" which allows you to submit an article, to view your submitted article, and to logout.

When you are ready to submit your article, click on the Submit New Article link under the Author Links sidebar (remember, the Author Links are only visible when you are logged in).

You are now on the Create Journal Article Submission page:

  1. Enter your name, address, and email
  2. For the school(s) section, enter your primary high school and please include the city and state in parenthesis after the school name - for example, Hillsboro High School (Nashville TN). If applicable, you may enter the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt, Governor's School, etc. as a second school.
  3. Fill in the full tile of your article
  4. Next, you will attach the individual files to your submission. "Browse" or "Choose File" to pick the file you want to upload from your computer and then be sure to press the Upload button. Once a file is uploaded, the filename will be listed as a blue link followed by a file size and a Remove button. You may click the blue link to open or download the file to make sure it is correct. If you uploaded the correct document, you can move on to the next item or remove the file and upload another one.
  5. Follow step 4 for the Article Document (required), Figures 1 through 3 (required for each figure in your Article Document), and the Table of Contents Image (required).
  6. Supplemental Information (opional)
    • You may have any reasonable number of attachments that may be uploaded one at a time as above.
    • Once you press the Upload button, type a description in the box that shows up under your file. The description should be what is listed in your Article Document, such as "Figure S1. Image of a firefly". The description box is limited to 60 characters.
    • After each file of supplemental information is uploaded, the "Add a new file" upload button will be ready for the next item
    • You may reorder your supplemental information items by dragging the crossed arrows that are to the left of each file up or down. The order of items should match what is listed in your Article Document.
  7. When you are finished attaching each item from steps 1-6, press the Save button. Even though you have uploaded items, your submission will be lost unless you save it!
  8. Once you press the Save button, you will see your submission as the reviewers will see it
    • You may want to click each link to make sure the files you submitted are correct
    • If you need to make any changes, press the Edit button under the large title of your article

Don't forget to Logout when you are finished with your submission.
